Overgeared Episode 1 Review: A Rushed Start That Still Earns Its Charm

The Korean webtoon-to-anime pipeline has another entry, and Overgeared wastes no time showing exactly what kind of show it wants to be. Episode 1 premiered on Crunchyroll September 27, with J.C.Staff handling animation, and it spends its runtime doing one thing well and one thing less well: it sells you on Grid immediately, and it rushes the world around him to get there.

Grid is the whole pitch

Grid is broke, underleveled, and treated as a joke by nearly everyone in the game he plays. That is a familiar LitRPG starting point, but the episode makes it work by leaning entirely on his personality rather than his stats. He is greedy in a way the show never pretends is a flaw to overcome, desperate for money in ways that are played for real comedy instead of pity, and quietly kind to the handful of people who treat him with basic respect. That combination, greedy and tenacious without tipping into either arrogance or misery, is what makes him watchable before he does anything impressive at all.

By the time Grid stumbles into the legendary blacksmith class that gives the series its title, the episode has already made the audience want that turn to happen for him specifically, not just for the sake of a power-up.

The pacing problem, and where it fixes itself

Episode 1's biggest issue is how much ground the first half tries to cover. Viewers coming in without webtoon familiarity are handed a lot of world and character information in a short window, and it shows in how little time some of it gets to breathe. Names, systems, and relationships arrive fast enough that a second watch of the opening minutes would not hurt.

The back half is a different episode. Once Grid's situation stabilizes and the blacksmith class enters the picture, the show slows down enough to let scenes land the way they are supposed to. That the second half noticeably outperforms the first is a fixable problem, the kind that usually smooths out once a series stops needing to front-load setup, but it does mean episode 1 is not the strongest possible introduction to the world itself.

Where the animation earns its budget

J.C.Staff spends its animation budget where it matters most: combat. The action beats in episode 1 move with a fluidity the rest of the episode does not consistently match, and the color work during fights, warm oranges against cool blues, gives those scenes a visual identity that stands out even in a single episode. It is a smart allocation for a series whose long-term appeal is going to live or die on how its power fantasy actually looks in motion, not just how it is described.

Worth the watch

Overgeared joins Solo Leveling, Tower of God, and The Beginning After the End in the current wave of webtoon adaptations chasing that same crossover audience, and episode 1 gives it a real shot at standing out from that pack on personality alone. It is not a clean introduction. The pacing hiccups in the first half are real, and anyone going in cold will feel them. But Grid is likable enough, and the fight choreography sharp enough, that the rough opening stretch is easy to forgive on the promise of where the back half suggests this is headed.
